Sérgio Miguel Sousa Gonçalves, born on April 7, 1979 in Funchal, is a Portuguese economist and politician, currently an MEP for the Socialist Party (PS). He has a degree in Economics from the Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE) and a postgraduate degree in Corporate Finance, as well as a master's degree in International Management from ISCTE Business School.
He began his professional career in the financial sector, at PWC Portugal. Later, he worked in the energy sector and at the Madeira International Business Center as a member of SAIPEM, part of the ENI group. In 2006, he joined ANA Aeroportos, where he was responsible for developing new routes in the aviation marketing department at Madeira Airports, beginning a professional career in the tourism and transport sectors. In 2011, he became executive director of several Sousa Group companies, including Porto Santo Line and the group's hotels on the island of Porto Santo.
His experience in the tourism sector also extended to associations. He served as vice-president of ACIF – Madeira Chamber of Commerce and Industry, vice-president of the Madeira Promotion Association, and was a member of the governing bodies of the Portuguese Tourism Confederation, the National Tourism Association and the Strategic Tourism Council of the CIP.
In 2019, he began his political career by being elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira by the PS, of which he was Vice-President in the XIII Legislature. In 2022, he assumed the presidency of PS-Madeira having been head of the list for the 2023 Regional Elections.
In 2024, he was elected as Member of the European Parliament, for the PS, also joining the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D). He is a member of the Transport and Tourism Committee, the Regional Development Committee and, as a substitute, of the Fisheries Committee. He is also a Member of the Delegation for Relations with South Africa as well as Vice-President of the PS delegation in the European Parliament.
